What Are The Signs Of Having

A Yeast Infection?

Yeast infections come in many forms but the most common and well known type occurs in women in the form of an overgrowth of the candida fungus in the vagina.

The signs of a vaginal yeast infection include burning and itching in the vaginal area, and an odorous vaginal discharge that is best described as looking like runny cottage cheese. These candida yeast infections can be treated by anti-fungal pills, creams, or suppositories and, if fairly mild, by natural remedies.

Vaginal candida infections are not the only type of yeast infections. Oral thrush (trench mouth) is another infections that can occur. The signs of this infection are easy to spot because of the obvious "cottage cheese" look to the inside of the mouth, including the tongue. If untreated this type of yeast infection can spread down the throat. If you try to scrape away the curdy bits you'll find the underlying tissue is raw and bleeding and is extremely painful. Although a mild case can be treated by eating live yogurt several times a day a liquid anti-fungal such as Nystatin that's swished round the mouth several times a day is often the best solution for most cases of oral thrush.

For most people, yeast infections are seen very much as woman's problem. However, both sexes whatever their ages can develop a yeast infection. For babies and children this is usually in the mouth or nappy area, for men the most common area is the penis.

Unlike jock itch (another type of fungal infection), yeast infections in men tend to occur in the scrotum and penis area, not just the groin. The most usual sign is patches of red sores near the head of the penis or on the foreskin. These sores may feel itchy and sometimes they have a burning sensation.

As can be seen by these symptoms in men, yeast infections can look like quite a few other types of infection. It's important for both sexes to get a proper diagnosis from a doctor especially when it's your first occurance. It's been found that a large proportion of people who've self-diagnosed a yeast infection have got it wrong.

People tend to worry that if they've got itching in their private areas and it's not a yeast infection then they must have an STD. However, simple bacterial infections are far more common than yeast infections and STDs and these infections can easily be treated. So if you've been treating yourself for thrush and the natural cures or over the counter drugs haven't been working go to your doctor and check to see if you really have got a yeast infection.
